We cruise along at all of ten miles per hour once outside, no speed limits here. Protected by the jetty, the big rock barrier quarried in Catalina for most of the one mile to the Bell Buoy and Sea Lions. We view the California Coastline, Catalina Island and The Wedge created by the backside of all that barged in rock. We arrive at the buoy and spend a few moments viewing the resident Sea Lion colony. While there the captain swings the boat around to scan the horizon for passing whales. February being the best month to spot the migrating giants. Picking up speed as we cruise back to the jetty and back to the lake like water of upper Newport Bay. The captain picking up the narration at about the bait barge Salmon Quentin" as Captain "Parasail Mike" coined it. "Next on our right, the Newport Harbor Patrol boats and docks. Baywatch docks, Coast Guard Station, at the end of the row, Mothers Beach - safest beach in Orange County. Coming up on left, our Sea Lion Tour media and mogul highlights Shirley Temple, George Burns, Our little buddys boat beached over there in Pirates Cove. A great snorkel spot on most days, with the right sunglasses, we can see the bright Garibaldi fish from the boat. Remember the "Hillbillies" series? Buddy Ebson loved to sail the bay. JC Penny, James cash Penney, his is the "upside down" house. Wrigley, Dick Dale, Dean Koontz all left their mark here......" Tour One leaves the jetty for about 5 minutes, unless its lumpy or foggy out, for a view of the coastline and visit to the Bell Buoy. Our boats are very stable and airy, Catalina Island blocking most wave action. Even those boarding with some white knuckles at departure, end up having a really good time. Tour #2 Celebrity Homes and Yachts.Narrated Newport Bay Celebrity Homes and Yachts Tour©45 minute tour: Celebrity Home and Yacht Tour - Departs even hours. Pulling away from the dock Our Captain starts with the safety announcement, requirement for all inspected vessels, even though we are a ten foot tall boat in eight feet of water for most of the tour. The "Showboat" gets to our maximum speed of of five knots, no wake allowed, in no time at all, as we head for Nics recently listed home. The tour begins as the Captains microphone keys up "Many of the multi million dollar homes you will see are investments. Assets held for a rainy day. I have heard tell, that one famous resident has 17 resort homes. We love Mr Cages' shades and colorful big birds out front, house to your right. We try to be cool in turn, letting him buy his breakfast at the secret local coffee place in peace. Another one of our of favorites Mr. Terrible, wait 'till you see the boat, John the "Duke" Wayne slept here, the new owner made a few changes, leaving a memorial gazebo. We liked it better when The Duke would wave at the "Belle" from his dock. Waynes' "Sands of Iwo Jima" beach assault was filmed across the way from the movie actors no longer existent house. It's rumored Cagney won the island and beach in a poker game, I like to imagine the game took place on the "Norwester" Newports wealthiest bachelor on the left. Now passing the home made famous by Columbo my favorite t.v. episode filmed in his home. Roy Rogers up on the left. The folks who built the first motor homes, local Balboa angels, have a house on the channel. Down the way and round the bend, a bowling alley in the basement used mostly by the housekeeper we hear, the lights on late at night. Lido will always be associated with Joey Bishop, his pals "The Rat Pack" Joe "E." Brown Bogart and Bacall , The pink house Bergen Edgar and Candice , she grew up on the bay. Coming up on the right, The Balboa Bay Club where Nixon stayed while searching for property in San Clemente, coming up the site of our favorite tv series "The Baileys of Balboa" with Sterling Holloway, based on a Balboa Boat Charter operator circa 1965......" The 5:25 PM departure: Runs out to the start of the Harbor Parade, the boats usually organized in a line by 6. Along the way we point out some of our favorites as we negotiate all the decorated boats to show you the themed homes of the upper bay - The Ring of Lights portion of the tour. Our boat will mill about with the contestants as the parade forms, taking the opportunity to seek out and display our favorites. After 61 Newport Harbor Boat Parades we do know where the viewing is and where the brightly decorated homes are. We can also offer a knowledgeable narration. Once the Parade forms we will ride along with it for while, on the way back to our docks, ensuring our guests a viewing of the entire Newport Boat Parade and many decorated homes. 7:00 PM sharp return.
The 7:25 Departure - The Late show, a quick turn around and a deep breath, this years Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade of Lights having gone by our docks, turned and are coming back towards us along the other side of the channel. We motor out and position ourselves in a good spot. We let the Newport boat Parade go by as we view and then motor along side with them for a while. We explore all of the boats in the parade and get some good photo opportunities, finally peeling away for some solo exploration of The "Ring of Lights" decorated homes. 9:00 - 9:15 return.
